January is the perfect month to start a project that warms your hands, your heart and your home.
That’s why Il Filarino’s KAL Coperta Afghan was born: a creative path designed to accompany you, month after month, in the creation of a 100% Merino Wool blanket, knitted with Afghan stitches.
A slow, mindful and deeply satisfying project, perfect for those who love to knit and turn their yarn time into a true wellness ritual.
It will also be an opportunity to learn or remember new stitches and then be able to use them in other creative handmade projects
A Knit Along to experience together
Our KAL is designed as a regular event:
each month we will work together on new tiles, learning or rediscovering stitches, textures and color combinations.
In total, we will make 48 tiles, all knitted, which will then be joined together to create a warm, elegant and timeless blanket.
A modular project, ideal both for those who like structured work and for those who wish to proceed slowly, without hurry.
Perhaps to alternate with other creations in needlework or crochet.
Afghan points: texture, rhythm and comfort
Afghan points are key players in this project:
-
create a rich, enveloping texture
-
make the blanket extremely warm
-
turn every tile into a small design element
Each module tells a story of stitches, repetitions and gestures that become familiar, allowing you to enjoy the process as much as the end result.
The yarn: Nordica by Manifattura Sesia
For such a special project, we chose a yarn that is a real treat:
🧶 Nordica – Manifattura Sesia
-
100% Merino Wool
-
Superwash, practical and durable
-
soft, warm and very pleasant to work with
-
Perfect for a blanket meant to last over time
Nordica is the ideal yarn for a home design project: it enhances stitches, maintains shape and gives an authentic feeling of comfort, the kind we look for in the colder months.
A blanket that speaks of home
This blanket is not just a knitting, but a real piece of furniture.
A design that was created to be experienced on the sofa, on the favorite armchair, on the bed in winter evenings.
Each tile contributes to a harmonious whole that can tell the story of the time spent, care and creativity you will have put into it.
A project within everyone’s reach
The KAL is meant to be:
-
accessible, even if you have never worked Afghan points
-
motivating, thanks to monthly appointments
-
shared, because working together makes everything better
Whether you choose to follow the project step by step or adapt it to your own pace, this blanket will grow with you, month after month.
Start with us here’s what you need:
The blanket is as mentioned made in modules, we will make 48 tiles that will then be joined together.
We will have 8 different stitches and for each stitch we will have to make 6 tiles.
With a 50 g ball of Nordica worked with 4.5 mm needles you will make 2 tiles, while to make the final border you will need 4 more balls for a total of 28 balls.
Your creativity and desire for color here is totally free, you can think of choosing 28 different colors or think of combining colors in nuances, remember though that 4 balls you have to keep them for the border.
If you want to start with all the materials at home, we thought of creating a KAL AFGHAN kit Which has the advantage of being very convenient
For the needles you can choose to work with straight or circular needles with a flat work but if you need them here is the link for the Prym Ergonomic Irons. I highly suggest them because they have a teardrop tip, and for more complicated machining they are definitely a fabulous ally.
Other accessories you may need:
Auxiliary iron: for braids and lozenges
Pin: Always handy
Markers: always useful for not getting lost in the dots
Needle from Wool
Remember that for each point we will support a video tutorial on our YouTube channel
If you love long projects, natural yarns and the feeling of creating something unique with your own hands, this KAL is meant for you.
👉 Get ready to start: the Merino wool Afghan blanket is about to take shape, one tile at a time. See you on Saturday, January 10, for the first date
Happy knitting
